Pavel Pogrebnyak's four goals in as many UEFA Cup ties have propelled the FC Zenit St. Petersburg forward to joint top of the competition's goalscoring chart – and jeopardised the chances of a FC Bayern München player taking the top-scorer accolade.

Bayern's Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski occupy three of the top eight places in the table, which takes into account goals scored from the first round onwards. And with three of the other players listed no longer involved in the tournament, the in-form Pogrebnyak has emerged as the most serious rival to the Bundesliga leaders' free-scoring trio.

Pogrebnyak, 24, scored in each leg of the Round of 32 defeat of Villarreal CF, and followed that up by scoring twice more in the second leg against Olympique de Marseille to secure the Russian champions' place in the quarter-finals. He is now on seven goals, the same as Bayern's top scorer Toni.

The UEFA Cup resumes this week when the Round of 32 fixtures get under way, and the race to be crowned the competition's top-scorer looks like being a close-run affair.

Walter Pandiani's tally of eleven last term for beaten finalists RCD Espanyol left 'El Rifle' out on his own, however if the standings after the group stage are anything to go by, this season could be somewhat different. Three players top the goalscoring chart with six strikes to their name, while a further five are just a goal further back.

The Spanish press and FC Lokomotiv Moskva coach Anatoly Byshovets could only marvel at Agüero following the Russian side's 3-3 draw with Club Atlético de Madrid on Thursday.

The capital club took the lead twice in Moscow, with the Argentinian star opening the scoring after 16 minutes and then providing a second spectacular finish five minutes from time to wrest a point for his side. El Mundo Deportivo headlined their assessment of the match with the line: 'An artist in Moscow'. The 19-year-old is certainly making his name known.

Agüero is a serious contender to be the top goal scorer in the UEFA Cup, who are his main rivals?

Ottmar Hitzfeld hailed 17-year-old midfielder Toni Kroos as "a future international" after his late goal earned FC Bayern München a 3-2 win at FK Crvena Zvezda.

The teenager came on for defensive midfielder Mark van Bommel nine minutes from time with the German side 2-1 down and struggling to deal with the pitch in Belgrade, and helped Bayern avoid their first defeat of the season. His free-kick from the left allowed Miroslav Klose to head an 86th-minute equaliser and he then scored the added-time winner direct from another set-piece.
